This is Barbara Kingsolver’s first published book. The first one I ever read of hers. It was in the early part of the 1990s before I even knew who Kingsolver was. I have several of her books now, but never even thought to read any of them until just recently when, on a whim, I read The Lacuna.
“Clear-eyed and spirited, Taylor Greer grew up poor in rural Kentucky with the goals of avoiding pregnancy and getting away. But when she heads west with high hopes and a barely functional car, she meets the human condition head-on.”
I read this again last couple nights, skimming through in places; smiling in others, and remembering all of it as if it were yesterday. The writing flows as Taylor makes her way across country to a better life in this first person narrative. I enjoyed the camaraderie of the characters, and found myself settling-in, once again with old friends.
Very cool.
