I have several books written by John Saul but shamefully have never read one. I picked out two other books from oft my TBR table …….. read a few pages from each and shelved them again. Then I saw Nightshade. It hooked me from page one.
There’s a not so likeable mother who has to live with her daughter after an ‘accidental’ fire breaks out in her own house; the daughter’s 16 year old son who is despised by the grandmother; a stepfather who doesn’t want the mother-in-law living under his roof; and a dead daughter who frightens the lot of them. This story revolves around unimaginable terror and the insidious consequences that ensue because of it.
I have to say that this book surprised me. I didn’t see the ending until John Saul wanted me to see it. A descriptive dark atmosphere weaved around psychological suspense that is unexpected and craft-fully written. Excellent escapism.
